Dear Neighbors:

Did you know the very character of our beloved community is about to change forever?

A 65-acre mega-project featuring a 250-room hotel, a 124,000 square foot medical facility and a 220-room assisted-living center is being proposed on Flowerfield, the Gyrodyne property on Route 25A between Stony Brook Road.

Join us Wednesday November 15 at 7:30 PM at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Center, 430 Middle Country Road(across from Smithtown Concrete) in Smithtown as we peacefully protest and speak about this ill-conceived and dangerous plan and communicate our opposition to Smithtown Planning Board. We hope you’ll join us at the planning session itself, starting at 8pm.

Here’s what you should know about the Mega Project:

  • Traffic will be carried primarily on overburdened Town of Brookhaven roads, in particular Stony Brook Road, one of just two north-south roads serving the area
  • The Suffolk County Planning Board has suggested a “road” be opened behind University Heights Drive, go behind homes and emptied onto Stony Brook Rd.
  • Additional traffic will be placed on over-burdened historical 25A
  • Construction on this parcel will make neighboring parcels targets for additional light-industrial development, positioning the area as a growing hub
  • Our fire and ambulance vehicles will be even more encumbered by traffic as they attempt answer calls and save lives
  • Taxes from the project will benefit Town of Smithtown, while infrastructure and service costs to local road and fire departments will be borne by Town of Brookhaven taxpayers.
  • And, most importantly, the quality of life so many residents came to the greater Stony Brook are for will vanish forever.

Our group has already spoken with and has the support of the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County and NY State representatives. We are holding a press conference this Friday, November 10th at Smithtown Town Hall.  We have also formed a coalition with 8 other area civic organizations to voice concerns about this and other issues concerning residents. It’s called the Greater Stony Brook Action Coalition.

Please mark November 15, 7:30pm on your calendar. It’s imperative we, the people of the community, raise our voices regarding the Gyrodyne development plans.

See you on November 15 at 7:30pm
