VILLAGE TIMES: Editorial: Stony Brook dorm is a good start

Proposed SBU Residence and Dining HallSome good news has come for residents who are frustrated with college students living in overcrowded houses in their neighborhoods: Stony Brook University is expecting to open a new dormitory facility on campus in 2016.

Construction on the 759-bed complex, which will include suite-style, single-occupancy bedrooms in two buildings, should begin this summer.

Residents of communities surrounding the campus, including Three Village, Port Jefferson and Terryville should see this as a victory. The availability of on-campus housing could decrease the number of students living in residential neighborhoods, as many transfer students and those studying for longer than four years have been turned away from the dorms due to limited space.
